I just want to clear some things up. Since posting this article: Salt For Flea Outbreaks as well as Using Garlic For Fleas, I have received a couple of emails asking how these types of remedies work for major flea outbreaks.
I have first hand knowledge of using a couple of natural flea remedies both for light infestation as well as heavy, and I can say in my own opinion that chemicals are needed for heavy infestations.
The garlic for dogs and cats is really something to use if you only see the occasional flea or you think that you may be at risk for a flea infestation. It’s generally a precaution type measure, to kill or repel a small amount of fleas.
The salt will work for medium infestations usually, the thing with both of these methods is that it really depends on the type of carpeting and flooring you have as well.
I understand that you may be wanting a completely natural flea solution that you can pick up at your local grocery store, or look for something in your cabinets, but there are also a couple of top notch natural flea remedies that are produced by companies.

The flea life cycle is about 3 months in total, so if you only put the salt down or only put the garlic in the food, there’s a good chance that fleas are going to hide out and find ways around your efforts.
These two methods are natural and for minor infestations and must be used in conjunction with heavy cleaning. This means moving all of your furniture, vacuuming couches, chairs, vacuuming the floor many times, dusting, using furniture polish etc.
You’ve got to get the house as spotless as you can, give it some time, and then clean it again. You have to break the cycle. You also have to give it time, after you clean the first time, it’s a sure bet that babies are going to be hatching, that were protected by flooring and carpeting.
I know a lot of people do not want to put chemicals on their pets or use something like flea bombs or carpet sprays etc, but if you are facing a major outbreak, where the fleas are in your bed, jumping off of your pet etc, you really have to use something like advantix or one of the other top brands.
Don’t sqimp and get some off the wall, non-name brand medication. You have got to have what works to do this right. Once you get control, perhaps salt, flea sprays for the bedding and garlic may help control fleas in the future.
I hope that clears some things up about using those natural methods that I have written about. I surely don’t want anyone to suffer one more day by using a substandard method during a massive flea outbreak.
